Do 5 Things That Scare You

Attending a Coco Jones Concert Solo

"If it scares you, do it."

"Everything you'll ever want is on the other side of fear."

"Don't let fear hold you back."

It's likely you have heard one of these quotes about fear before, or numerous other quotes with this same idea. All urge us to overcome our fears with the promise that we won't regret it if we do. I am a testament to this. Nine times out of ten, when I overcame my fear about something and just went for it, it worked out! It even turned out better than I could've imagined, and I found myself questioning why I didn't do it sooner! For this reason, I have made the rule that I will try to do five things that scare me every year. This is a great way to practice overcoming fears, and to keep yourself open to new experiences.

I started off strong this year by performing at an open mic night in January. I had been afraid to do open mic nights for awhile, after I believed I bombed some in college. My blog post, Hi, I'm Christine. I'm a singer-songwriter!, tells the full story. Long story short, I did GREAT at the Writer's Round open mic night! I learned to let go of the idea of perfectionism, and I was so proud of myself for finally overcoming that fear.

The second fear I faced was in April when the guy I met at a salsa dance night asked me to be his girlfriend! Hey, this counts because dating and taking a chance at love is scary! I'm a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to romance and relationships. I’ve only had one boyfriend before, and a few failed romantic exploits, so taking a leap of faith into this new relationship was nerve-wracking. (Especially after pursuing self-love and healing for so long!) Well, it’s four months later, and I can confirm that it was worth overcoming that initial fear. We're both smitten as kittens, and have enjoyed every moment of getting to know each other better as partners. We’re even taking a romantic weekend getaway to San Diego this weekend!

Now, what really brings me to writing this blog post is the third fear I decided to overcome this year– attending a concert ALONE. I went to a Coco Jones concert SOLO! Yes, I've done a lot of things solo, especially on my self-love dates, but I've always been afraid to attend a concert alone. It feels like there's an unspoken, universal rule that concerts are best when attended with a group of friends, a significant other, or with any other person. Most concert venues are large, or at a nightclub setting, so I usually like to have a buddy with me for safety. However, when FREE Coco Jones tickets popped up on my Instagram, I didn't hesitate to claim mine, even though I failed to check if any of my friends were available.

I saw a girl on TikTok talk about her experience with attending concerts alone, especially when she really wanted to go, but her friends were busy, or uninterested. That video gave me the motivation I needed. "See, she could do it! People do this all the time, you'll be fine. Plus, if you feel that awkward, or scared, just text Josh!" I had my game plan, and I was ready to go!

Guys, let me tell you… without fail, God will always reward you for being brave, and overcoming fear. I had the BEST time at that concert. While waiting in the line to get checked in, I met two girls behind me who had also come alone to this concert! They too had convinced themselves to be brave, and just go. Before we even made it inside the venue, I had my posse for the night! The event was a part of the BET Awards weekend festivities, so everything was sponsored! They had free Coco Jones t-shirts, free churros, and a free drink included with your ticket. I even got a $5 Amazon gift card for taking a quick survey. Shoo, that's money for shipping fees! We were honestly all amazed that an event like this existed in LA! Talk about a Budget Baddie win!

When we finally got into the venue, near the stage, we made friends with this cute couple who were standing near us. They were matching our dancing and singing vibe, and quickly became a part of our new Coco concert friend group. I showed up alone, but I ended the night with new friends, and new experiences I would've missed out on if I let fear keep me from attending this concert. Shoo, I would've missed out on all those free goodies too!

After having such positive, and worthwhile outcomes of the first three fears I’ve faced this year, I'm excited to see what new adventures and experiences the next two will bring! Consider this challenge to do 5 things that scare you as fun side quests for your life. You'll be amazed at what's on the other side of fear! The three I've done have brought me new opportunities, new friends, love, and a newfound confidence that most things will in fact work out for your good. Let me know if there's anything you've done this year that scared you, and how your experience was with overcoming that fear. I also need two more ideas for myself, so let me know if you have any suggestions. Should I go skydiving?! Lol maybe I'll overcome that fear next year...
